KAU Interview

Caught up with KAU to chat about their second album ‘Unknown Waveforms’ released on SDBAN —how they describe their sound and the ways it’s grown. Can’t wait for you all to hear it! They’ll be performing live on October 16 at Botanique, Brussels!

TELL US THE ALBUM’S STORY?

André: The title of the album “Unknown waveforms” comes from as sometimes we’re not sure, it’s like happy accidents. We’re trying to just put things together. We don’t know what’s happening but we try to capture that moment and make a song out of it.

WHAT’S THE KAU TOUCH?

Matteo: We do like to blend a lot of sounds of accoustic drums with analog syntesizers. We try to keep that sound as much as possible. I think it’s part of our sound as much of electronics beside some samples it doesn’t go futher than that. We don’t use ableton. We don’t even use metronome. We like metronome to practice but we don’t like metronome to play on stage. We actually try to avoid it.

HOW HAS YOUR MUSIC EVOLVED?

André: We’re kind of entering a new phase. We were trying a lot of new stuff So basically we went and we tried to find a new sound. We did a lot of searching and we wanted make a new chapter for ourself. I think the album really reflects that. There’s more openness and more spontaneity. We’re not trying to make everything so squared and I think it comes through actually.
Matteo: We tried someting really new for the first time. We worked with samples. This is really new for KAU. Except that everything is analogic

WHAT DO YOU WANT THE PUBLIC TO FEEL?

André: What we are trying to transmit is Ben being in the room with us. I don’t want it to feel overly produced. I don’t want to make it cold or something like that. I want to make it like they’re hearing it and there’s, like they’re two meters away from us, you know.
Jan: We would like the listeners to feel like they’re in the room with us. We want they listen to the whole album because we have thought a lot about the whole story we wanted to tell without words.
