From Brussels to Brighton and back! Go behind the scenes with Kuna Maze at his Ancienne Belgique release party! The Brussels-based producer talks about the making of his new album and how partnering with UK label Tru Thoughts shaped the project’s direction.
WHO’S KUNA MAZE?
Kuna Maze: I’m a musician, producer and DJ. I compose, I play.
I’m also a bassist
HOW DO YOU INVOLVE YOUR BAND IN SONGWRITING?
Kuna Maze: I started the Kuna Maze project as a solo producer. I was composing everything in my homestudio with samples and stuff like that and as we go along I wanted to go for someting more playful. I integrated the bass that I used to play myself. I’ve brought in people to play solos on my previous ep’s and albums. On this new album I really wanted to join the team that follows me during the live shows, my musicians on this album so, to make it, I did some pre-prod work which I then made them play again, so we re-recorded it giving them space to adapt and also to propose personal ideas so that there’s also their touch on the album.
HOW DID YOU COME ACCROSS THE TRU THOUGHTS LABEL?
Kuna Maze : The meeting with Tru Thoughts was done on another project called NKM with the producer Nikitch we sent them an e-mail and they replied that they were interested in working with us. we’ve released two albums with them so when I wanted to work a bit more on my solo project so I suggested it to them and they agreed straight away. So, since then I’ve started with an EP then a second, a first album, then the second “Layers”.
WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO WORK WITH A LABEL LIKE THIS?
Kuna Maze : I think it helped me to have an opening first with England because they are based in England and also to reach the audience in this niche of which I am part and with people listening to this music all over the world, compared to me with my power to spread maybe I wouldn’t have managed to get them to listen my music.
